Her hair! Her beautiful hair!

So in the four years my daughter has been alive, she has done it all. Baby oil, shampoo pasted bathroom; baby powder snowstorms, fingernail polish in the carpet, fried two DVRs with juice…you name it she has done it!

The latest though..literally brought me to tears. In a matter of ten minutes alone, she scaled the bathroom cabinet, got Daddy’s beard scissors from the top shelve of the medicine cabinet and…

I walk into the playroom to find her huddled in the corner, the room covered in hair! I screamed, “Why?, your hair…your beautiful hair!”

She claimed she was trying to make a beautiful hairstyle. She is now wearing hats, everywhere we go! There are literally chunks missing everywhere, none of it is salvageable.

Here are the after pics…

Oh sweet Lord. We had a hair incident here recently, but TG it was only below her ears – she’s got a bob. I’m so sorry 🙁 🙁

I feel your pain, I really do! When my now soon to be 10 year old and soon to be 9 year old (both next month) we 3 and 2 we had a similar incident only with beard trimmers that were left on the counter by their Uncle one morning. I heard the buzz from the living room and thought “nooo, it can’t be, they are on top of the cabinet” but ran in there anyway just in time to see my 2 year old little girl’s hair falling to the floor. She looked up at me smiling hugely and said “Mama, INA ROCKSTAW” Her brother had shaved a line down the middle of her head, ALL THE WAY BACK to the crown of her head. It-Was-Horrifying! We too had to buy hats and when she would rip them off in public (because all two year olds do) people would gasp in horror and make her sad 🙁 She told me after a few days that she no longer wanted to be a rockstar….

I do hope you can now laugh about this as much as I did just now.  INA ROCKSTAW — I could actually hear her say that!

  • emily farrer

    she’s still adorable 🙂

My 6 year olds hair got in her face last week and she got it “out of her face” ie-gave herself bangs!  AHHHHHHHHHHH!  When I was in elementary I went to put leave in conditioner in my hair….my hair started falling out and mom near had heart attack.  I had put Nair in my hair 🙂  Oops.  Fortuantely, it was just top of head I just had to wear cloth headbands for a year

Why the hats? Just shave the whole head and spare her the awkardness of being “patches”. Then again, this is coming from a woman who got a terrible haircut and shaved her head pretty low than wear damaged, horrid looking hair.

I cut my bangs off with toe nail clippers AND ate an entire packet of the little red tablets that they give you to see where you missed when you brush your teeth just before family church pictures!

Oh my….can’t…stop…laughing! I can so relate.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660088365 Jodi Weathers Langlois

and my brother shaved his arms and legs with my mom’s razor.

Oh my. I feel your pain. My daughter did the same thing with SAFETY SCISSORS that “will not cut hair.” Someone should have told her that. Breathe. It will get better.

    • Morgy

I just had to try, I grabbed a pair of my 7 year olds safety scissors and clipped at the ends of my hair. And it worked. So I’ll be keeping those out of the reach of the 3 year old. I escaped this with the eldest so lets go for a record.

Awe.  She is still beautiful.  I do feel your pain.  Mine has done this a few times.  I am a crafter and love to sew but i have learned the hard way to put the scissors on the roof.  LOL.

awww she is still adorable, and this is the perfect chance for you to teach her to make the best of a mistake. She has enough hair left to do waterfall ponytails on the top, it looks like. Or you could let her have fun wearing a wig until it grows back enough to cover up the bald spots. 🙂 That’s the best thing about hair, it grows back! 🙂  My daughter has done the same thing, but fortunately I caught her before she made a bald spot. The doll that she “practiced” on beforehand however, was not so lucky….

BTDT…it’s like a rite of passage. Welcome to the mom’s club! hehehehehe

Let her feel the full ramifications of her actions.  Don’t hide her hair… let her (and you) deal with what she has done.  It is a great parenting lesson. 🙂

An aquaintance of mine with triplets had a similar incidence – she ended up just shaving the child’s head.  The other triplets were jealous, so she let them shave their heads too.  Everyone thought they had cancer or something.

my oldest and my second youngest have done hat hair.  i think it’s a unifying symbol of motherhood!

My sweet little girl did this the first day of preschool. This particular haircut made it all the way to school pictures that year. It grew back and all is well. She’s not so little anymore, so I would deal with self-inflicted haircuts just to be able to have her little again.

I think every kid has done this. I know my little sister and I both did this at separate times. It goes along with mom cutting your bangs crooked for picture day.

  • CloiR

I did that when I was a kid…. *sheepish grin*  I think my mom had the same reaction.  Like one of the comments below, my mom got me a pixie cut, once it grew out enough!

My 10 year old did this a few years ago.  He had overheard a conversation where I said that I didn’t have the money (on me) to get him a haircut.  That night, he went into the bathroom and cut off most of his hair. He was so proud because he thought that he had saved us money.  Yes, you must have guessed it by now that I just had to go to the bank to get the money and that he was getting a haircut the next day…and of course school pictures were the day after that.  He is wearing a baseball hat because I shaved his head lol.

My son cut a “rainbow” into his skater bangs to get ready for a very special field trip. That was 13 years ago and we still laugh and love the memory. It is amazing how fast they can cut, tho!

my sons have cut their own hair and each others and if they do it thank god they are boys i just do a close buzz cut to hide the  mess lol but even at 8 the oldest stil does it some times dunno why neither does he lol

I did this as a kid, and when my daughter was three, she one-upped me by cutting her own AND the cat’s hair. With safety scissors. She’s eleven now and I can still hear my mother laughing.

4 years old…that’s the cutting year for most kids.  When your kids turn 3 start securing any/all items that they can cut with so when 4 comes you are ready.  Oh maybe even have a cutting play time and explain what sizzors are for and how they work.  Good luck

I babysat a 4-yr-old who HATED her long curly hair because it hurt when mom brushed it. My 5-yr-old fell asleep with gum in her mouth, and of course it got into her hair. So, I took her outside, and carefully cut the gum out, and trimmed around it to blend it all in, gave her some new layers, looked ok when finished. Next day, teh 4-yr-old’s mom tells me her kid gushed gum all over her hair and announced “Now you have to cut it like E’s mom cut hers!” Mom was SO mad! But, she knew how to get it out with penut butter, so the kid didn’t get her haircut after all.

When my 15 yr old was 4 I had gone to work and my husband (now ex) was home with her. I went to the bus stop to pick up my son and about 6 other mothers came up to me, shaking their heads and saying you haven’t seen your daughter yet have you? I said no why… no one would tell me why but said, You are going to kill your husband, apparently they all saw her when he dropped our son off for school… I raced home to find my beautiful daughter who had hair down to her waist looking like she was a victim of a nuclear disaster with chuncks of hair cut off here and there. Long straggly pieces all over… She took the scissors while her father was sleeping and wanted a ‘new look’…. I was speechless. My husband was laughing his butt off and I wanted to cry.  I was able to cut her hair into a cute short style. As other moms have said, its a right of passage. And do you think she learned her lesson? NO, a few months ago she decided to “fix” her bangs….. She chopped off 7 inches and made them too short!! lol

    awww… she is so cute!!
